Spicy Potatoes (Lebanese Spicy Potatoes)

Updated: Aug 22

These keep me going - these are Batata Harra, or "spicy potatoes" in Arabic.

Batata Harra originated in the Levant region of the Middle East and they are such a delicious part of our cuisine. They are so easy to make and packed full of flavor.

They tend to be fried or shallow fried, but since I emphasize the importance of health and wellness, I roast the potatoes instead. Don't worry, the potatoes are still delicious roasted in the oven since they will be covered in a flavorful spicy cilantro sauce.

You can eat the potatoes with a fork or pita bread. They are enjoyed as an appetizer, but you can have them on the side as well for a great source of carbs and fiber.

You're going to need potatoes, olive oil, salt, red pepper flakes, paprika, fresh cilantro, garlic, and lemon. Let's get to the recipe!

Yields: 2

Prep time: 15 minutes

Total time: 1 hour

This recipe is dairy free, gluten free, and vegan.

Ingredients:

2 russet potatoes chopped into cubes

Extra virgin olive oil

4 minced cloves of garlic

Salt

Paprika, red pepper flakes

½ lemon

1 bunch fresh cilantro, finely chopped

Instructions:

1. First, preheat your oven to 400.

2. Next, grab your potatoes, wash them, and then peel the skin off.

3. Chop them into small cubes.

4. Place them onto a baking pan.

5. Drizzle on 1-2 TBSPs of olive oil.

6. Next, salt to your liking. Bake in the oven for 35 minutes. Gently flip the potatoes and allow them to bake for 10 more minutes.

7. While you were waiting for the potatoes to finish baking, prepare the cilantro.

8. Once the potatoes are done, grab a frying pan and place it onto the stove top on medium low heat. Pour in 2 TBSPs of olive oil and the minced garlic. Add ¼ TSP of red pepper flakes (less or more depends on how spicy you want them), and stir the sauce.

9. Add in the ½ TSP paprika and the fresh cilantro in. Stir.

10. Add in the potatoes and make sure they are evenly coated in the spicy cilantro sauce. Taste a potato for salt. Add if necessary.

11. Add to a serving plate and garnish with more fresh cilantro. Enjoy!
