Shuzmuz aka Shakshuka

Updated: Aug 27

Now, it’s easy to claim a food as your own but it’s more noble to do your research and see where the foods you eat actually originate from. Even though Syrians call this recipe Shuzmuz, the dish originated in either Tunisia or Yemen and is called Shakshuka. After years of my mom making it for me for breakfast, I decided to made it my own way. This dish is usually enjoyed with pita bread, but you can also use regular toast to dip into it or just eat it with a fork. So, let me show you how to make it!

Yields: 2

Portion: ½ eggs

Prep time: 15 minutes

Total time: 35 minutes

This recipe is dairy free, gluten free, and vegetarian.

Ingredients:

3 eggs

Either 5-6 small tomatoes or 2-3 large tomatoes

1/4 cup of freshly diced parsley

Extra virgin olive oil

Salt

Black pepper, garlic powder, Aleppo pepper, ground thyme, smoked paprika

Instructions:

1. First, grab your tomatoes and wash them thoroughly. Make sure to peel off all the skin. Next, finely dice them. Now in a medium sized frying pan, drizzle in 1-2 TBSPS of olive oil and let it simmer.

2. Add in the tomatoes and cover them. Let them cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes. Now, drizzle in a bit of olive oil and cover again for another 2 minutes. Next, sprinkle in salt and black pepper to your liking, a dash of Aleppo pepper, 1/4 TSP of garlic powder, and 1/4 TSP of smoked paprika. Mix well and cover again for 2 minutes.

3. Now grab your eggs and crack them in 3 separate places in the tomato sauce. Salt again and cover until the eggs are done to your liking. Finally, season with ground thyme and fresh parsley. Enjoy!
